Salah satu alat bantu yang dapat digunakan dalam perencanaan penggunaan lahan adalah model prediksi erosi. Penggunaan model-model erosi telah banyak digunakan di berbagai negara termasuk Indonesia, namun demikian pengembangan model-model erosi dan input paramaternya yang sesuai untuk kondisi negara tropis seperti Indonesia belum banyak dilakukan. Ada dua macam model penduga erosi yang sekarang ini banyak dipakai yakni model berbasis empirik (empirically based model) dan model berbasis proses (process based model).
